Linda Skelton Dorothy Wills i think there were contraptions like this down lower Maruia where school children and groceries crossed to tge homes across the river. I remember cars parked on the roadsides for the trip to Murchison. There is a name for them but escapes me just now

Noeline McCaughan I recall crossing the Maruia river in a cable car like this with my parents visiting friends on their farm in the vicinity of the Shenandoah. Apart from fording the Maruia it was their only way of getting to the other side of the river. p.s. We only called the smaller one person contraption a flying fox.

Linda Skelton I suppose it was an advancement on the crossing we used to use going across the Maruia river to go up the Alfred river. 2 no8 wires across between trees on opposite banks. You stood on the lower wire sideways and held the top one sidestepping across. The wire was a bit slack and tended to go woop leaning forward... woop leaning back... The knack was to get on a forward lean with stiff legs locked knees and Bobs your Uncle. Didn,t help that the wires were spaced more adult size and we were kids going across.

John Martin Always a tricky place to cross.I don't think there is anything left of the Lyell any more,except the cemetery.The new bike trail starts from there.
