My granddad, Frank Mitchell was a Blacksmith at Jack Powicks in Westport. He is linked to Mitchell’s Gully, near Charleston, with Val & Johnnie being cousins of mine.

My father left school in 1917 at the age of 11 and became apprenticed to a tinsmith.

Just love these photos. This shows the labourers, reliance on horses for transport and used in the mine. It was not unusual for children to leave school early to help with family income and/or business. We can only admire these people of which many were immigrants from Ireland, England coming for a better life.
