Date Created21st July 2019CommentsGlenn Johnston This is an interesting photo. Among the steam in front of the boiler looks to be the mainline drum for log hauling. The smaller winch drum with the man beside it is likely a loading winch but it could be an unusually positioned tail rope or straw line drum. But for the steam it would be clearer what is going on but I'd say it is a logging not sawmilling operation!

Glenn Johnston This scan of a 1957 photo taken by Les Cleveland shows a diesel powered log hauler that belonged to the Kopara Sawmill logging crew. Without steam obscuring things you can see the main rope drum with the larger diameter wire rope and the tail rope drum with the smaller diameter wire rope. The more I think about the above photo I believe to the left among the steam is a logging hauler and to the right beside the person we have a loading winch. When logging I drove several types of hauler, two that were diesel powered and one that had a petrol motor. That was a decade or more after steam haulers were banned in State Forests.

Trevor Molloy the last two logging steam winches I remember was united sawmills one in cockeye creek , Fred Holmes was the winch driver , and Inchbonnie sawmills one at the back of Rotomanu , run by Faulkner and Andersons Freddy Youngman was the driver .

James Codyre G Gibson and Sons of Ngahere operated a Dispatch Foundry steam winch until the mid 60s then it went to the islands.It was replaced by diesel powered hauler.NZF Service deemed the steam winch a fire risk.

Michael Wayne Stuart Well done team,I think that is agreat break down of the photos and the loadiing winchwas often set to the side off hauling unit as it was not always required.

Ceol Mhor NZ There's actually two people and two winch's operating in this the scene. Take a close look ,you'll see another man operating the larger winch amidst the steam.

Glenn Johnston An advantage of being able to load the tram or trucks independently of the main hauler/winch is that you could keep pulling wood while the trucks were being loaded. On small operations the hauler would be used to load the trucks and therefore would have to stop pulling wood while this was happening
