About this image
Description(L to R) Henry, Clara, Andrew Snr & Jnr, Gilbert, Charlie, Gordon, step-mother.
ANDREW DALZIEL Snr. b 8/12/1878 Dunedin d.1932 Nelson Creek aged 54 years. Sailed to Okarito from Dunedin, then settled in Nelson Creek 1901/02. Worked on the mining dredges for Alexander Mining Co in Central Otago. As a result of falling into a dredge hole and having to ride several miles in his wet clothing, he contracted rheumatic fever which affected his heart. He was Dredge Master on Pactolus No. 3 - one of 6 dredges working the creeks and streams of Nelson Creek valley. Part of his job was to lift the gold off the matting and deliver it to Greymouth, and on his return journey would bring back the men’s wages. He later worked on a dredge out of Reefton. Andrew took out a miner’s right on 250 acres of land in Nelson Creek and built a house there where he lived for the rest of his life. There was 14 acres of river flat where he ran a few dairy cows, 100 acres of standing bush, and the remainder had been milled and burnt with large stumps still to be removed in readiness for farming. Although Andrew had the mining rights to the land, the timber rights were held by his father and brothers-in-law. The timber wasn’t milled until the 1920’s as Andrew was still working on the dredge and had only the weekends to work on the farm. He collapsed and died while working the family gold claim in 1932.
CATHERINE SADLER (not pictured) b. 25/5/1886 Nelson Creek d. 10/6/1922 Nelson Creek, as a result of the diphtheria epidemic. Her family had the store and sawmill in Nelson Creek, and she married Andrew Dalziel Snr on 28/3/1906.
ANDREW DALZIEL Jnr. b. 1906 Nelson Creek d. 1966 Greymouth. Apprentice at Greymouth Star and later in charge of all commercial printing. Held an early Greenstone mining licence in the Arahura River, 1962. Acclimatisation Society officer, mineral collector, Home Guard, deer stalker, Freemason (Past Master of Greymouth Lodge 1233, 1946-47).
CLARA DALZIEL b. 1908 Nelson Creek. When her mother died she was 14/15 years old, and took over the responsibility of the house and caring for her five brothers.
GILBERT DALZIEL (Gib). d. 1993. Builder’s apprentice, and later helped to build many schools on the West Coast.
HENRY DALZIEL. Worked in the bush, contract work, eg. sleeper cutting, props for the mines, felling, etc. After his father’s death in 1932, Henry purchased the family farm and moved his family into the house. When Henry was killed, the farm was sold to his mother’s brother.
CHARLES DALZIEL (Charlie). Worked at the local sawmill in Nelson Creek. After his father’s death he worked the late shift at the mill and a day shift at the farm until it was sold. He bought his father’s share in the gold claim from his stepmother and later bought James Becker’s share. He then served in WWII.
GORDON DALZIEL. d. 1996 Nelson Creek. Worked in the bush with his brother, Henry, then worked the family gold claim. He and his wife, Jessie, lived on a few hectares of land in Nelson Creek until their deaths, and ran a small herd of sheep on the Nelson Creek river flats a few hundred meters downstream of the swingbridge. They also had a significant number of chooks and a small orchard. Fly fisherman.
DALZIEL GOLD CLAIM
In 1917/18, Andrew Snr. with James Becker and Jack Blackmore, took a lease on a gold claim which took in the headwaters of three creeks (Surprise Creek, Nelson Creek and Gows Creek). After the war Charlie and Jack Blackmore (son of the original owner), split the claim, each working one creek. When Charlie left Nelson Creek, he sold the claim to his brother, Gordon. Gordon did well from the claim and eventually passed it onto his nephew CLIFF DALZIEL, after they worked it together using a portable suction dredge for a few years. Cliff’s eldest son LEON DALZIEL also helped work the claim for pocket money as a teenager. The gold claim was in the family for 75 years.Map[1] ContributorLeon Dalziel
