Bob King Locals had a temporary bar built pretty much the next day to keep the licence going.

Allan Dock I was heading from ChCh to Westport the morning it caught fire. Was an amazing site and a bit scary driving past with sheets of white hot roofing iron flying through the air and across the road. Yes they did have a temporary bar open within 24 hours of the fire.

Vividly recall that hotel. As myself and 3 other Deer Cullers walked from the Ada/St James station through Cannibal gorge and trudged down the road to a welcoming publican and delicious beers all round. Rough, dirty, rifles, paraphernalia and unkempt we ended up at a 21st party in Hanmer Springs. Wonderful day, night & memories......

I was travelling from ChCh to Mokihinui with friends that morning and saw the fire. As a kid it was a very scary sight with sheets of white hot roofing iron floating across the road. Will never forget that sight.
