This is a photo of Rita Hibbs, Charlotte and John Hibbs adopted daughter. She was adopted from one of Charlotte's unmarried sister. Rita went to Australia to live and married a Frenchman. She had an amazing life for a woman in those times. Nobody has seen a photo of Charlotte that I know of her father was born into slavery and was part west Indian and we believe his father was a scotsman. My sister went to live in Karamea and met an elderly person that knew Charlotte well when he was a child and said she was very dark and they used to wonder where she came from. My father Bill Hibbs told us he used to go up to Karamea to stay with them they had a farm up there which most of it was taken over for the air strip during the war. They are both buried in Westport.Kaye McNabb
