Geoffrey King Where the Cummings houses were Bert and his eldest son had their homes up drive on the hill. Looked out over Masters Street state houses and on the sea side Leith Crescent and Dr Bird senior house, the big brick mansion, sold to Jack and Ruth Connors (Connors and Blackmore auto electrician Tainui St). Jack and Ruth and all the kids a nice family. Jack once said to me Geoffrey you will not do any good in this town...I said what makes you think that Jack...He said you are the wrong colour....meaning I was not a Roman Catholic....green...lol, have never forgotten that but back in those days the Catholics did not speak highly of the protestants and vice versa

Don Hutton Geoffrey King There was a degree of wariness and competitiveness at times but my memory is of friendly relations 99% of the time. Re Cottles Hill, in the 1940s two spinster Miss Cottles lived in a house above Leith Crescent. Ian Cummings bought the property and built a new house probably in the 1960s.

Don Hutton Ted Preston Yes. My contemporaries John Montgomerie and Ross Anderson lived close to the foot of the hill in Marlborough St. Pru Harper and Margaret Panckhurst were both in my class too.

Don Hutton Above Leith Cresc off Marlborough St. We used to go up there a lot. The Miss Cottles kept an eye on us because they had an orchard which was tempting!

Don Hutton In the centre of the photo amongst the pine trees is the Cottle's house which Ian Cummings bought and replaced. See my notes with Recollect photo. Good memories. I was 10 at the time.

Miles Reay Yes, I remember Cummo living up there Don. He married Liz Wylde.

Doris Blanchard My uncle and aunt the Hopgoods lived in Leith Crescent in the 1940s and I remember them mentioning Miss Cottle who lived near them.

The Miss Cottles - there were 2 of them - caught me in their orchard and threatened to remove my pants and make me walk home starkers from the waist downPeter East We had the Karoro Post Office Store and lived next to Duncan Dunwoodie. I remember that pipe well - gave me the heebie jeebies going through there to the beach.
