By: ken dalzell17th Feb 2021 12:28AMI believe that this was one of the Olderog Homesteads, the other one being at Malfroys before being washed away in a flood. The Olderogs spent a lot of time recovering greenstone from the river and sent it to Germany for jewellery. They were the first Europeans to find the in situ deposit of stone upstream while prospecting for gold reef and Olderog Creek is named after them. Dick and Charlie Olderog also had a hut on the Kawhaka Road where they lived, raised cattle and also sought greenstone for export. My grandmother Minnie was one of 13 children who later married George Carter Dalzell and lived at Runanga in the butchery trade.

I also have a photo of William Olderog Esq. showing off his prime vealers from Arahura. Of course the family is famous for finding the jade up Olderog Creek while fossicking for gold reef.
