Date Created13th August 2019CommentsLorraine Dennison My dads family lived deniston there were around 14 of them .my dad worked in the mines at the age of 9 . my great grandmother lost a husband in the Brunner and is buried in the stillwater cemetery .she also lost a husband at Katanga . she was mentioned on the denniston rose book Lorraine Dennison

In late 1994 I attended an Engineering Heritage Conference based in Christchurch. On the pre-conference tour we traveled to Arthur's Pass by train, then by bus down through the Otira Gorge across a structure cantilevered off the side of a massive cliff. After spending a night in a Hotel at Greymouth we continued up the West coast to Westernport and further climbing the steep road up to the remains of the coal mine workings where we were given a description of the workings and the incline. That evening in Westernport we were shown the film " Coaling in the Clouds. " It was a very memorable experience.
