DescriptionThe White's Electric Gold Dredging Company's dredge which is ready to commence operations over about 200 acres of land near the foreshore at Barrytown, 19 miles north of Greymouth. An unusual feature of the construction of this dredge is the absence of rivets, nuts and bolts, every portion of the structure having been welded. The dredge has been afloat in an area of water alongside the main Greymouth-Westport highway and has been an object of considerable interest to travellers along the road. Ian Andrew Jonson: I'm sure my Dad, Stew Jonson, worked on this dredge about this time, as an electrician. He would be a the local pictures, and film would stop, and a slide come up on the screen " would Stew jonson report to the dredge" and the crowd would all groan!

Graeme Peters: I was talking to Tom Hartills dad Claud and he told me that he was the blacksmith on that dredge Tom maybe able to confine this He told me the dredge kept sanding up behind it and they had to keep stepping forward they never dredged the bottom and there's a lot of gold left behind and yes you can still see the pond g

Andrew Lineham: I am led to believe there we're 2 dredges there??. One was moved to Mt Garnett North Queensland in 1956 and is still there today quietly rusting in Nettle Crk since work stopped 1980. Can anybody enlighten me to how it got there and also about Awara Hay the boss that went with dredge, cheers

Maye Dunn: Brian Gillooly as far as I know the dredge houses were down at the beach. When I was a kid in the 1950's the sea had started to come in and swallow them up. I remember one old guy who still lived there his name was Jack Hannah. Also some of the dredge houses got moved away, I know the Henry's transported theirs to Boddytown.

Ian Andrew Jonson: Dad - Stew Jonson, worked on this dredge about this time.I wonder where he lived.

Don Hutton: Just wondering what Tom Hartill might have to say about this.

Tom Hartill: Don Hutton Hi Don, I think they were along the beach road. I have never seen a photo of them.

Vaughan Smith: Brendon Rae ,your grandfather had alot of land, bóth side's of state highway 6 Barry town to punakaiki.

Maye Dunn: Vaughan Smith Jim Rae had the land where the conservation farm is on both sides of the road. He owned the hill side of the road for many years then he bought the Hill Bros farm across the road. The hill side of the road is where the black petrels nest.

Barb Rodway: I remember this building on the right side of road heading to Punakaiki

Garick Mcdonald: Barb Rodway that wasn’t a dredge that the ilminite mine.

Roger Janette Reid: Garick Mcdonald This picture is the dredge right down on the beach south side Cargills road.

Marty Farty: And then the sea took that road and buildings ! ! look out Rapahoe.

Doreen Thomson: My dad worked on that dredge I think about 43/44 as part of the manpower scheme and we lived across the highway from the pub.
