George McKenzie This event looks as though it was the five-leg "two-man relay". One runner competing over three legs of approx. three miles and the other two. Starting and finishing in Tainui Street, Greymouth, the route would transverse the Cobden Bridge go up the "back road" to Taylorville; over the then bridge; back down the main highway back to Greymouth. It was the idea of Trevor Sweeney who was the pioneer and driving force of the Greymouth Harrier Club in the 1950 - 1960 era. Eddie Gray was a tremendous athlete on the track, road and cross-country. He was NZ cross-country champion; won the Scottish cross-country championships and shortly thereafter was third in the World cross-country championships . . . a magnificent performance. Typically a very modest West Coaster Eddie never ran for glory just for the sheer pleasure it gave him. Even into his 60s he was beating rivals a third of his age. I would suggest in the accompanying photo that Steve has just completed a leg of the relay and has handed the baton over to Eddie.

Gary Boucher George McKenzie during my short time in athletics and harriers in Greymouth Trevor Sweeney was the driving force in both.Ifound him just as good a life coach when asked as well as the time he gave to me in mid distance athletics as a youngster.I think he also had a bit to do with basketball while in Greymouth.
