Samuel Hill and family

DescriptionSamuel Hill, in the early 1860s at 16 years old, left his native Drummaquill, Northern Ireland, on a one-way trip to establish a somewhat at times complex family tree on the Coast. Two wives and 18 children later ... add in a few more generations, and on 14 and 15 September 2019 a wee gaggle of descendants of Samuel and Sarah Hill (nee Strong) and Abigail Hill (nee Gilmer) will be invading Greymouth to renew family connections.

This photographic collage is a wee homage to the founding member of the descendants of Samuel Hill, Samuel himself in 1909 (top right), who had established himself as a butcher and dairy farmer on Omoto Road. With much begatting, issuing and such forth, including with wife Abigail Hill (nee Gilmer ... yes, as in Gilmer Hotel; pictured here with some of her broad, including Ethel Hill (my grandmother) I recon seated at right in this photo. Tragically Abigail Hill also passed away at a young age, like Sarah Hill, and presumably not too long after the photo on the left depicts here, along with two of her daughters, Ethel Hill at rear, and I think Jessie Hill. Samuel Hill must have had a bit of a tough time keeping the boys at bay at times, with the lower right photo of three young Hill maidens (Edith, Mabel and Jessie Hill we think) ... butter wouldn't melt, I'm sure.

I thought I would post here, as there are still rellies who we have not yet made contact with, and anyone who claims some kind of connection is welcome to join in a rollicking time (very informative as well, I'm sure).

so much to do during this weekend in Karoro cemetery, Omoto Road, extending to Blackball, Reefton, Waiuta, Black's Point and Crushington.
