This group features in a story of rescue along with the local community of my great uncles as youngsters when missing in bush 1896....check out papers past West Coast Times 23 December 1896. Journalism of the day quite unique and Great Grandma Mulvaney would have been in trouble for abandonment with cypfs if it happened today. Interesting reading. Michael went on to be decorated following WW1 and Jimmy returned early with severe injury. The old man with his foot on a box is most likely Jacob (Hakopa) after whom the Makaawhio was named Jacobs River by gold prospectors in 1865. He ferried them across for sixpence. The girl third from right could be Jacob's granddaughter Mary (later known as Aunty Mary Smith).
