Date Created12th September 2019CommentsLisa Keenan My great grandfather was a bucket boy on that incline. My Nana would tell stories of riding them down to town as a child. She arrived at Dennistion as the age of 3 did all her schooling there.

Terry Bradley I was taken up there in 1957 as a six year old. I don't remember much, but I do remember everything being almost black. Houses, nappies and chooks as the grown ups used to say.

Robert Finlayson My Great Grandfather came from Lancashire with his family in early 1900's to work in the mine before getting the wharfingers job in Westport. My grandmother lived on the hill for all of he schooling & left just before she got married. Hard life up there in those days.

Elezabeth Peters A distant relative of mine owned the Denniston mine - Loftus Peacock. He retired at about 35 and lived in Westport. This was in the 1920s and 30s.Allan Robinson

Karyn there's some interesting family history from there during the late 1800's. Whenever I was in the Buller area I always visited Denniston and my last visit was in 2012, its well worth the trip up there.

Graeme Williams agree. It's amazing up there now. They've done a lot of work to cater for the tourism sector. Its such a very interesting place and to know our family has a lot of history with 'The Hill' makes it more special.
Jenny Pattricks books are a solemn and bleak reminder of those times.
