Shirley Barrow Aorangi Reserve backs onto Marsden Road, Greymouth, so not too sure where hotel was because too far away from Hokitika.

Maye Dunn I have never heard of the Aorangi Hotel and after much research I can't find one shred of evidence that one existed. I think it maybe Koiterangi , it's the closest I can find to the name. Otherwise it is not on the West Coast.

ShelleyandTony Gibson Think there were 3 hotels in Marsden township. Pioneer, Fitzsimmons and Marsden hotels. Reserve in Marsden area is Arorangi, rather than Aorangi, so Aorangi hotel probably elsewhere.

Peter Robertson Just a thought? Could be within view of Mt Cook which was always called Aorangi (in Maori) until someone said it should be Aoraki as this is the local dialect way of saying it .

Interesting photo. Jack Adamson was a well known mountaineer who spent a lot of time in South Canterbury and visited South Westland. I think this photo may well be South Westland thus well further south of Hokitika than 30km. In 1897 Adamson did a long trip crossing the alps from Canterbury to South Westland where he went out to Karangarua and Okarito getting fresh supplies. Scope here for a bit of research but I wonder if this photo was taken on the South Westland part of that trip?

Gav Schist I reckon those places are possible or further south as I've already suggested. Most of the bigger river mouths used to have accommodation houses with the licensees having to provide ferry services. Presumably Aorangi/Mt Cook could be viewed from this establishment.
