My grandfather had a gold claim at Callaghans, he took me there where I was young. We panned for gold.

It doesn't look to be either of the West Coast Callaghans to me. This looks fairly coastal?

Heather Newby The newspaper excerpt above relates to Roundhill in Southland and a Callaghans down that way near Orepuki not the Callaghans and German Gullies that neighbour each other here on the West Coast. By the geology and vegetation this is a coastal scene. It looks similar to parts of the West Coast but if the newspaper link does relate to the photo it will be near Orepuki in Southland where there were goldfields.

Glenn Johnston I have just walked Long Hilly (Round Hill) at Orepuki although it is near the coast it is not coastal as the cliffs to the sea are too high to get to the beach. I know there is another walk near there that I haven't done yet maybe this this is it. Although the cliffs in this photo look too high to be down here. Round Hill was a Chinese goldfield.

Maye Dunn I used to be based in Tuatapere and have worked in the Longwoods so have poked around some of the goldfields down that way. My first thoughts on seeing this photo was that it had been wrongly captioned and that it was coastal West Coast. If it is correctly captioned and does relate to the newspaper excerpt it will be down Orepuki way? BTW Round Hill is known for its Chinese but it wasn't only Chinese that mined in that area.

The house is no longer there. Sandy. It's just a paddock now & it's opposite Conlon St entrance - more or less.
