DescriptionAhaura Railway Station environs about 1945.
This station was much bigger than the one that followed. When it was demolished there was a huge bee’s nest in the walls and honeycomb and sticky honey went everywhere. At this time, I was living in the railway house on the other side of the road as my father was the local ganger. Riding on the ‘fairy queen’ jigger is my mother Patrica Forsyth (Sergison), my older sister Josephine, and our cousin Brian Vare visiting from Lyttelton. We went to Greymouth in carriages hauled by steam engines. I think that the family living in the smaller railway house on the town side of the Orwell Creek Bridge, at that time, were the Robb’s.

Timothy Smith Must of being close to the 1980s mark when they got rid of Ahaura Railway station.

Pauline Failes Loved your mum Tony, many memories including of her sitting at the school baths in summer with my mum as we all refused to get out of the water!

Tony Forsyth I lived in the railway house across from the station for, at a guess, four or five years. We swam in Orwell Creek (behind the house) but also on the railway wagons parked on the sidings. The wagons had heavy black tarps over them to cover whatever was inside and when it rained the tarp sagged and a pool formed. The water used to heat up quickly and my sister and I were lifted up and played in our personal heated pool.
