Hard to believe. Was a hub of activity. A goods shed, stockade, siding with wagons being loaded with timber from Ahaura sawmill. A track through to the river for dozers crossing and more

In early NZ, major rivers dominated political, business and administrative divides (eg Hokitika and Greymouth). As a result, Ahaura was the important govt centre of the Grey Valley for years until the river was bridged. Even some of the early Inangahua gold claim disputes were adjudicated there.

Only a few of us walked past it every day to get home after school. And maybe played for a bit or walked on the railway lines.
