This photo is of my Great Uncle Arthur [Art ] Mumford and his horse winner of the telegraph handicap at Omoto on the 26th Oct 1915 also won the 2nd day of the Greymouth Trotting Clubs Meeting. Family legend had it that on the way over to the races a horse dropped dead at the top of Arthurs Pass and the trainers were trying to push it over the side off the road before the Stage Coach arrived but the Stage got there first and one of the passengers putting his head out the window remarked " my goodness Mr Holmes that horse has been dead a few times before but it's fair dinkum dead this time...//// Soon after this he was of to World War One...///Date of Photo1915Map^[1]ContributorMurray Hill

Brian Molloy As you can see from the hopples he is also riding a harness horse not a thoroughbred which means it would have been going a lot slower. Having said that riding short is a much more recent development than 1915.
