Alan N Barb Cochrane: His name was Cochrane know as the Bealey bandit He run the ferry service.

John Kerr: Eventually they pushed a button and realised it had an engine, that did away with the horse because it was pretty much as slow as the stagecoach.

Sophie Allan: Nothing beats a horse for traction to power ratio, and the breather is well above the water level! This one looks like it is doing it with ease. Lots of vehicles still get drowned crossing rivers today, probably more so now with all their electronics, advertising showing them as indestructible and driver inexperience.

Cedric Trounson: Sophie Allan there were many fatalities at the waimakari and kellys creek where riders were drowned and also horse were lost.

Sophie Allan :It was called the 'New Zealand death', death by drowning as it happened so often with Europeans underestimating our swift and deep rivers, so different to their own.

Sophie Allan: Looks like nikaus in the background though?....they wouldn't grow at the Bealey I wouldn't think. Way too cold. Could this be up the coast somewhere? Looks more like sand than river boulders.

Merv Burrell: I would agree with the fox, perhaps bridge being built?

Maye Dunn: Not the Fox there was no foliage below the bridge as the old Brighton town was there. We have photos to compare it to.

John-Jill Smith: We think it is the Punakaiki river. The bridge was a foot bridge so you could go to the blowholes. The Coast road opened about 1920. The Fox river had a tunnel to go through upriver from the present day bridge.

Maye Dunn: I agree John-Jill Smith looks more like Puni to me.

John-Jill Smith: Sorry road opened in 1927. Maybe road bridge under construction.

Niaouli Wolf: It certainly is not the Bealy crossing over the Waimak wrong bridge in background. Wrong foliage on trees too.
