My understanding is that cyanide was and still is used to breakdown ore in hard rock (gold mines) the picture of the United Mine at the Ten Mile would seem to be a private coal mine. Why would they use cyanide bins there?

Garry Dunn: Dave Perry they used the tanks to hold the coal extracted from the mine. On top of the 'bins'the coal was screened and held until Dunn's trucks took it down to the rail head at Rapahoe. They used the steel tanks, not the cyanide.

Brian Wheatley: Not sure but I think they might be converting cyanide tanks into coal bins.

Christine Hogg: Cyanide tanks or aqua regia tanks? Aqua regia is 1 part nitric acid to 2 parts hydrochloric acid.

Dave Perry: Christine Hogg Still lost me. Why would you use cyanide to screen/wash coal? Doesn’t make sense to me. If this is the old United Party Co-op Coal mine operated by Jim Hambley and Partners then no cyanide was used there! Help!

Cynthia McCaughan: Dave Perry it was the bin not it's contents that were used.

Dave Perry: Maybe what Maye is trying to say is that some of the small private coal mines like the United Party Mine used old recycled cyanide bins from gold mines like Waiutu as storage bins for coal after the gold mines closed. That would make sense to me!

Maye Dunn: Dave Perry I believe that is what it is. They were recycled. I'm only quoting what was written with the photograph.
