Shirley O'Connor Myron Caldwell sure is. One for James the plumber/engineer if there is nothing else to do.
Judy Tawhiti Is this up the hill past where Dale's and Buckeridges lived .Aunty flossie Dowling lived below hill by catholic church.
Christine Stewart Where abouts pls
Looks familiar
Karyn Soper Is it the Pahi house before the vine?
Barbara Sheard Karyn Soper nope not Pehi's
Sue Vaughan Nana Pop Detlaff where is this?
Pauline Failes Jean McIntyre do you know?
Dianne Manera Kev still lives there
Barbara Sheard I think it might be some of the houses that were down by the train station
Nancy Phil Could be Miss King's (later Mr Purcell's) beside us in Aylmer St. not sure tho
Danny Breeze Weren't they on Gibson street opposite the school
Suzie Breeze Yes they were Danny, I used to graze my horses in the “backyard”
Danny Breeze I remember playing in the yellow one an when it was pulled down riding around in the old pukekura mill j1 Bedford with Dad an Rob BennettJohn Nancekivell Could be down by the railway or mill!??
Linda Skelton Looks like it has been on fire wherever it is
Dea Minehan I'm thinking your old place where Micky doda lives Dianne...Diane Tapp Julie Madigan Julie Manera Julie Leaf will remember!
Dianne Manera No it’s not Dea
Abby Leaf Yeah Mickeys. It's still the same shape and same fire
Abby Leaf Aw nah the mountains are behind them
Dianne Manera The fire place at Kevs was on the other side. Got Ray stumped
Danny Breeze They were on the section where skinny and Anne's place is now, white one was biddy's place
Dianne Manera Will show to Jimmy Manera tomorrow
Dea Minehan Spare section still there...sort of.They were 'tent sites'
Dianne Manera It’s cool that someone has put this up, lot of debate
Ave Muir Dianne Manera You’re so right Diane, definitely Pehis. Been thinking about it all night Didn’t recognise Muir’s next door, been over 40 years since we lived in Ross. How are you anyway. Maurice said he had a good catch up with you all at Tommy’s funeral. Take care
Dianne Manera Ave Muir no it’s not Pehi now when I think about it. As someone said there’s hills in the distance but it would be the sea if it was Pehis. The house next door is to big for Muir’s house.
Dea Minehan Defiantly not Pehi's thou-ran up or down that passage a few times with Nancy on my tail...
Dianne Manera Hehe
Tracy Lee Terry Corkran any ideas?
Miles Anderson Yeah
Julie Leaf It’s not Bob Persils and the next one is Mitchels on Alymer street
Sue Tozer Gibson st looking East. You’re probably right Danny Breeze The hill you can see behind. The trees on the left background probably rec ground ones. And a house that is probably on Aylmer st there too.
Ron Lyn Lindsay Looks like Gibson St. We lived in the house with the green roof when I was s kid, about 1940. Lyn nee Laughton
Dianne Manera Is it where Emits little house is now. Jack Cornish. Was it there, I don’t know.
Jenny Leach not sure were these houses are in ross
Jean McIntyre We lived in Gibson St & don't recall that house - looks like some old bachelor's place ! - only remember Bob Persil and his house set further back wasn't it, Nancy ? Not Choco Gardiner's place on Moorhouse ?
Nancy Phil Jean McIntyre I had put a comment in earlier wondering if it was Miss Kings or later Mr Pursils but I don’t really think it was. Just looked like Mitchell's house with the green roof. I tried to tag David Dellow before too, get him to have a look at it.
Jean McIntyre or Tom Finnertys at top of hill /
Nana Pop Detlaff Choc G's place was never in this condition. He had sheep that kept it neat and tidy!
Barbara Sheard Jean McIntyre nope not Old Tom's
Biddy Manera i have photos of the place when i rented Codgers from Jim and Elsie Manera, when Ben was young.....
Jenny Leach Yep think it is bob persils with mitchells next doorCarrol Barnes - Baker Gibson street Ernie Wilson lived in the yellow one when he worked at the sawmill
Dianne Manera We think it was on Aylmer street, second back from the information centre. Birchfield’s built that new house on the site.
Ron Lyn Lindsay Gibson Street across from the school. Lived in the house with the green roof in the 40s. Bonifaces lived further down the street.
Biddy Manera You are correct, those 2 properties are included in the site that Terry and anne Manera have their home nowadays
Dianne Manera Ray thinks you are wrong, look at the hills behind it,they are mount Greenland.
Ave Muir Dianne Manera Just think everyone’s off track with this, the photo is older than 73 We were around then Diane. Sure Ray would know. Getting frustrated now
Dianne Manera Ave Muir I haven’t shown it to Rays dad yet, he would know and he’s 93 and lived here all his life. But we are sure it’s not Gibson street.
Dianne Manera You must admit it’s been a great debate
Ave Muir Dianne Manera Maurice probably will know, but he’s away till Friday. Jimmys bound to know
Dianne Manera I think he will
Biddy Manera no, im not wrong....Ive always known the houses ive lived in. The green roof house was Codger and Lenas. Ive got photos of Ben sitting in front of that house when I rented it from Jim and Elsie. It was in Gibson street, opposite the school. Ben would…See More
Hayley Mangan you do know biddy as you lived in the house , just other people think they know it all lol
Sandra Douglas I rec Its Gibson st houses straight opposite school .
Sandra Douglas Also hav photos of codger&lenas...def Gibson opposite school...debate over .
Sandra Douglas Did think it could been houses down at railway station look up to Ross..
Dianne Manera Has anyone looked at the map,am I right in thinking the house is the corner of Gow street and Moorhouse street
Sandra Douglas Dianne Manera NOoooo
Susan Kane Arthur said it’s opposite the school where Terry and Anne built. Codger and Lena Vincent owned the first one.
Hayley Mangan yes just like Danny Breeze said and was right but some other people like to think that they are always right and yes Susan Arthur is correct to
Bryan Eckhoff Didn't have houses like that down there
Bryan Eckhoff Maybe it could be our house with mum out front
Sandra Douglas Bryan Eckhoff no def ..houses Gibson st opposite school
Max Johnson Handy mans dream
Dianne Manera No one has said they are right Hayley, everyone is only guessing. But of course you are right.
Dianne Manera Oh I see one or two think they are right, so not just you Hayley
Dianne Manera Ok asked Jimmy Manera, definitely not Lena Vincent’s , he said he should know he owned it. Could of been by the old police house, he thinks it was once owned by a Mrs Parker who owned a lolly shop across the road from the now shop.
Suzie Breeze Vincents house was the white one not the orange one. I used to graze my pony at the orange house- it was where skinny’s driveway is now
Dianne Manera Yes Vincent’s house was where Terry built his house, but not the one in the photo
Merle Mason Maybe the location is not Ross or the year is incorrect. I can't place either house other than thinking Gibson Street.
Suzie Breeze The photo has certainly caused some discussion
Ave Muir Merle Mason same, thought Vincent’s was on the corner of Gibson and Moorhouse, Nana and Grandad Thomson lived that end??
Abby Leaf Be funny if it was not Ross
Merle Mason I think there may have been a section then Vincent's....trying to remember. I think Ernie Wilson may have rented a similar house in Gibson which would be prior to 70's.
Carrol Barnes - Baker yes Merle you are right I couldnt remeber the Vincents but remeber Ernie because he was boarding with us then went there
Merle Mason Carrol Barnes - Baker I put him there in the late 50s early 60s and cant remember that house in the 70s??
Carrol Barnes - Baker it would have been about early 60s we had not long brought Don Buntings house on the hill and Ernie came to stay with us after a motor bike accident and stayed until he rented that wee yellow house cant remember who off though
Ave Muir Merle Mason This photo is older than the 70s, Maurice is away, will be home tomorrow. Sure he would have delivered a paper there
Bryan Eckhoff Merle Mason, Ernies drives the fastest milk cart in the west
Dianne OBrien Merle Mason The Lolly ship was owned by Aunt Elizabeth Trembath for many years.
Dianne OBrien one lolly shop next to the top pub
Dianne Manera there was a lollie shop where the bus shelter is
Jo Pearce Dianne Mum and Dad would beg to differ on their old shop being called a "lolly shop" as they definitely sold more than just lollies and Dad always did the milk run down to the railway station to collect the milk. Slides we kids were looking at the other night of the inside of the shop showed lots more than lollies. We even spotted the old dukebox.
Dianne Manera Jo Pearce sorry Jo just a lazy way of describing your folks shop, who owned it before them
Jo Pearce Pretty sure it was Gilmore's. Nice to see I'm not the only night owl who doesn't sleep
Jo Pearce The boy's and I had fun here in Ross last week going through a lot of Dad's old slides. Set up the old projector and shone it on the undercoated lounge wall. Slides of Ross Christmas parades and kids in fancy dress from 1963/64 and 65.
Opening of the "new" hall, opening of the Haast Pass, now that looked like a miserable day weather wise.
Suzie Breeze Oh Jo, could you do a slide evening one night? I’d love to come and see them
Dave Dellow Dianne OBrien yes and after her I think Joan Manera (Anderson ) had it, Jimmie Maneras sister
Merle Mason Dianne Manera Jo Pearce Des Kelly owned the shop before the Sheards and prior to Des it was The Gilmours and was run by Nancy.
Dianne OBrien Dave Dellow Joan worked for Aunt
Jo Pearce Suzie Dad also had home movies of the parades and Ross School swimming sports etc but we haven't found them and think he sent them all off to the NZ Film archives years ago when they were having a big drive for people to send in any films they had of the districts for preservation.
Suzie Breeze Give them a ring- or get hold of me when you get home next
Dave Dellow Jo Pearce I think we are at cross purposes here, I think the shop Dianne OBrien is talking about (Trembaths) up beside the Empire and the shop u are talking about (Gilmores) down by the Totara Hall are two different shops.
Jo Pearce Dave Dellow my comment was for Dianne Manera not Dianne OBrien
Carrol Barnes - Baker Merle Mason yep you are right
Polly-Paddy Minehan Down the railway station???
Polly-Paddy Minehan Is it one of the mill houses ???
Ron Lyn Lindsay There was an empty section on the corner of Moorhouse St and Gibson St with a big Holly tree in it. The owner of the hotel that is now a "cafe " kept a cow in there. We lived next door in that house across from the school!!!
Dave Dellow It is in Gibson St opp. School.Jim Brady lived there and Roy and Lena Vincent next door, Cyril and Lorna Boniface were on the other side and we lived next to them. After Jim I think Colin Moweka and Graham Barnes lived there then Earnie Wilson. Ray John's lived in Bonifaces house then George Thompson Snr
Myron Caldwell I am surprised how much this house has moved around Hoki since it was posted. it has been on so many intersections, it is no wonder it began to fall apart.
Dave Dellow Myron Caldwell it's in Ross
Myron Caldwell well that has cleared that up HaHa. It has certainly been around.
Ron Lyn Lindsay Thank you. At last some one else knows that house
Frank Winter Dave Dellow you are so right !! They looked nothing like the in the 1950s ! Time has not been kind ! Gillian Davies Winter
Ave Muir Been talking to Maurice ( Muir) who only thinks he knows everything can’t remember delivering papers too either of those houses and reckons
Ave Muir The contour of the hill in the background is not Mt Greenland???
Suzie Breeze yes, he is correct, it’s not Greenland, it’s Moyes hill, just before Greenland
Biddy Manera Suzie Breeze the hill above the green roof chimney is part of Greenland, the one to the left of the other house (on Gibson St :) )...is Malfroy Spur....Moyes Hill is further to the north (out of shot)
Suzie Breeze Yes so it is got my M’s muddled
Rae Woods What an absolutely marvellous thread, what are we all gonna do when those people that know stuff are not here??. What’s to become of us, the young in’s today can’t even start a lawnmower, let alone empty the catcher!!!. And this throw away society that we have created , hasn’t done anybody any good, apart from the manufacturing companies. I think we will be the last no. 8 wire fixit generation to ever walk on the face of this earth. Unless the chump blows us all to smithereens before then. Anyhoo, that’s my two cents worth, or maybe only one cent, oh that’s right they are both extinct. Lol
Myron Caldwell Rae Woods. Why don't you let it all out, or haven't you enough days. You are so right. Does that come from experience, or maturity? I know a little about the latter being 1938 vintage.
Rae Woods Yeah I just a youngan from the fifty’s, lol . But trained a lot of the so called uni students in electrical line building, safety, and looking after your mates. Sad to say most of them never made the grade, just didn’t want to do the hard yacker, soone…See More
Jo Pearce Don't know if this will help but here is a slide Dad took from our shops back door and shows the rear of Gibson Street houses being discussed. The shop was joined to the old hall and was demolished along with the hall to make room for the "new" hall.Biddy Manera Jo Pearce took this photo of me, standing outside the south side of the white house with the green roof (that I rented from Jim and Elsie) on GIBSON ST, ROSS. On the very left of the shot, you can make out a section of the old Dental Clinic at the school, across the road on GIBSON ST
Biddy Manera Mark Shead and John Manera taking off, from the white house with the green roof on GIBSON ST.....see the Dental Clinic. Hope this clears up the arguments on the street....I think the heading is 'houses in ross'
Ron Lyn Lindsay Definitely GibsonSt. Remember that chimney well. Played cricket with my brothers and friends Teresa Hargreaves was one I remember Dorothy Muir and Jean Woolhouse were there to.
Ron Lyn Lindsay Biddy Manera Thank you Biddy remember that chimney well
Rae Woods Funny just about everyone had a pet deer or goats back then, or possums, definately chooks and big vege gardens. Long drops and compost pits.
Jo Pearce Rae the Sheard family certainly had our fair share of pets ranging from deer, ferrets, sheep, pigs, calves, goats, a Kea, geckos, rats, mice, birds, turtles, frogs, hedgehogs, cooks, ducks, rabbits to the normal cats and dogs And I have probably missed out something Oh and Guinea pigs....
Susan Barlow Jo Pearce Turtles! Really! How fascinating.
Rae Woods Jo Pearce why can’t we have them all now
Dianne Manera Don’t care any more, over it
Kevin Voigt Nice to see ross is still one big happy family
Ray Port Lol...All the houses looked the same in Ross..
Especially in the railway housing..Ave Muir Heather Newby Just need to know Heather, don’t know about reco, haven’t got a computer. Don’t even know how to work my phone?? Know how to still type. Thelma Wilson taught me well
Heather Newby Ave Muir well done!
Kevin Voigt Nice to see ross is still one big happy family
Biddy Manera Im concerned that some people dont believe that I know where I lived Kevin Voigt :) :)
Ray Port Lol...All the houses looked the same in Ross..
Especially in the railway housing..
Kevin Voigt Hi biddy ,suzie I reckon that is Greenland for sure
Kerry Weir
It is a shame to see it that way. Lean was my grandmother and her and Codger (Roy) kept the place immaculate. I missed going there for school hols. Ross was a great town to explore and getting mussels from the beds at the beach was a fantastic experience.Julie Leaf
We lived in Lena’s house when we first got married in 1975
Karl Pehi
No way is this Roy and Lena's place, it was smaller and I walked past every day for years.
Kerry Weir
Karl Pehi The one with the green roof is Lena's and Roy's. the entire corner section including the house opposite the school on Gibson Street/Moorhouse street corner. I spent many days and nights during Xmas and school holidays in that house. it is gone now.
Karl Pehi
Kerry Weir Sorry I have to disagree, Roy and Lena's house was not that big and there was not a small house beside them like the one in the picture. I'm going going back to the early 60s with my memories of Gibson st but this is not the Vincent house. Lena used to give me her famous bickies when I was walking past met up.
Warren Thomson
Did Codger play halfback for the rugby team in the 1940's? At that time was he living in the street/lane behind the the Empire Hotel?
Karl Pehi
Warren Thomson Yeah he did, before my time but he was a legend among my parents generation.
Heather Newby
John Clark awwww
Bob Laing
Opposite the Ross School on Gibson Street, there was in the early 1950s a vacant section on the corner of Gibson St and the main road. The house next to the empty section looks like the one in the photo. The chimney was for the lounge room fireplace.
We lived in that house from about 1950 to 1953 or thereabouts.
Codger at that time used to drive a truck for NZ Railways. They had some 12-15 large trucks based in Ross to service south of Ross for freight and stock transport.
Lena and my mother were good friends and used to go fishing with Mona Owens and Paddy Douglas.
Kerry Weir
Codger was also chief of volunteer fire brigade and I still remember the procession up to the urapa to lay him to rest. Every time I am in Hokitika or Ross I always visit Lena & Roy up on the hill. As well as Emmett Hansbury who was my godfather.
Karl Pehi
Kerry Weir Yes the older generation is has almost gone now but as they say not forgotten. My great uncle Les Gilmore was the last of the ww2 servicemen to pass away. Nothing but respect for these oldies.
Joyce Fuller Looks very similar to my uncle Sunny's Ablesons house in Ross when I was young long time ago as I am 86 !!!

John Clark awwww
