Dave Perry: Maye Dunn Back In The day of import licensing and import restrictions new cars were only available to people who had overseas funds in a bank which they were able to access to purchase a vehicle. The funds were sold and an import licence to the value was issued to allow the vehicle company to import the car for the buyer

Maye Dunn: Dave Perry thanks for that. I never understood how it worked. I remember as a kid my father buying a new car from Brown & Walters and talking about overseas funds.

June Keating: This was when farmers sold their wool overseas so as to get the necessary funds. Farmers at that stage had new cars when others had to make doo with second hand cars.

Alan Messenger: You could just walk in and buy a new car if you had a portion of the price in an overseas account, but otherwise you had to put your name on a waiting list. Farmers had part of their income paid overseas and immediately qualified. Also people who had worked overseas, even Australia and left some money there qualified.
