Glenn Johnston Sam Preston's drapery shop, later son Jack's in Revell Street (now Postie) is also a concrete building but is not the concrete building in this photo which is the Gibson Quay bakery. Bernard Preston would know when the use of the Gibson Quay bakery was discontinued.
Marilyn Paterson Glenn Johnston I’d forgotten about Sam, but golly I was pretty young when he was in the shop.
Glenn Johnston Marilyn Paterson I don't remember Sam at the drapery shop but I do remember him. He lived in Rolleston Street with son Jack and his family. I knew Sam by the name Bargey/Barjee which was what Jack's kids called him. He used to impress us kids by doing headstands which was pretty impressive from someone his age.
John Nancekivell Eats, when it was Preston bakery was a fancy restaurant and was supplied with goods from Gibson Quay building, until it clpsed and becamea plumbers shop (I think)
Marilyn Paterson John Nancekivell I don’t remember the fancy restaurant but do remember older people telling me about it. I think I remember them telling me that the Prince of Wales attended a reception there. I seem to even remember a fancy menu.
John Nancekivell Marilyn Paterson l remember it as a bakery, the cafe side was closed off, they used to display their fancy wedding and 21st birthday cakes in the windows, but thats along time ago, my grandad used to take us for walks along the streets on Friday nights so I got to see and can just remember the town back then 58-till now
