Van Den Bergh & Co. gin bottle shoulder seal

DescriptionI found this Van Den Bergh & Co. gin bottle shoulder seal on the Hoki beach. Pity it wasn't on an intact bottle. I think it would date from the 1860's or 1870's though Van Den Bergh's were using sealed gins long before this. I've never found an intact gin like this one but know of two intact Coast found examples with the same version of the bell seal.

Date Created1st November 2019CommentsIan Coates Back in the early 80s just north of the southland hotel, they were having a bit of erosion troubles,and there must have been a old dump exposed and it was chocka of bottles like this lots were still intact and i would say there will be around in someones collection still as it was done over by bottle hunters

Glenn Johnston Interesting! I've found intact gin bottles on the Hoki beach but without glass seals. I was away from Hoki for a stretch of 27 years from the end of 1980 so missed out on the early 80's erosion.

Glenn Johnston The company Van den Bergh that made the gin was based in Antwerp Belgium. Huge quantities of gin from Holland and Belgium used to be shipped to the West Coast goldfields.
