DescriptionPhoto 1:in early 1960 travelling Makarora to the West Coast. One is of what I think was called Clarke’s Bluff on the Haast Pass Road (31 March 1960). Bear in mind that the Haast Pass road was not yet open to the public, and I distinctly recall the sign saying “You travel past this point at your own risk”. In our biggish 1939 Pontiac the rough not fully formed road was quite passable.

Kevin Blanc My unckle Keith farmed at Makarora and we family spent many happy holidays there. I remember all the gravel roads between Hawea and Makarora

Liz Stewart Yes I remember Keith well he was a great mate of my fathers Kevin Nolan xx We used to stop at the farm at Makarora for a 'breather' after travelling the shingle roads out over the Haast Pass. Usually a carload of kids who all were carsick!!

Yep Clarke's Bluff it is. By this time we were driving truck's through to Haast after fording the river at Pleasant Flat. (Reids Transport, Luggate).
