By: Shon Yde6th Feb 2020 10:18AMSamy Emil Yde came from Dienze ,East,Flanders, Begium.He was married to France Harris at St.Mary's Catholic Church ,Christchurch on the 7th January 1913.His wife Frances Harris was the elder sister of Jane Marion Harris who Walter (Stormy) Neame.
John Harris & wife Louisa (nee Ridley) Harris had 4 daughters and a son John Major William Harris died in a tragic horse accident 1912',
Annie Mary Sophia Harris married a Schumacher they had a pub in Kumara
Violet identical twin sister to Jane Marion (nee Harris) marrie Walter(Stormy ) Neame
Violet married a Roper they had a small farm outside of Runanga latter an egg farm.
Frances (nee ) Harris married Grand dad Samy Emil Yda.
My grandfather Samy Emil Yde migrated to the usa on board the Zealandia of the RedStar LIne with his brother.Samy Emil Yde worked in the California goldfields before coming to New Zealand via Syney Australia

Lillian Grace Fell,former stagecoach driver of Sammy Yde's ,and Lucy Buchanan.

DescriptionThis lady on the left is Lillian Grace Fell, (1905-1988), who was born in Otira. Her father worked on the railway, and had several children, Lil was the youngest.
She is known to have driven the stagecoach of Sammy Yde's on occasion, and also drove teams of horses towing cars "up the hill".
She is pictured with her friend Lucy Buchanan, and Lil lived in Greymouth in her latter years. They were both keen whitebaiters down in South Westland.
This is the only known photo of Lil, and I'd like to find out more about her; if anyone can tell me more, please leave a comment.

Date Created22nd November 2019CommentsHeather Newby Lucy and Sandy Buchanan used to work with me in an apple orchard at Motueka in 1971.Dad bought their Kopara bach off them. They had a bach down at Haast where they used to whitebait,Mum and Dad used to go there and stay,They married late in life..both their second marriage. They were so happy together, They were soulmates.

James Newby My father bought his batch for a $1.00 from Snowy Lucy’s husband which was up at Safety Creek on the Ahaura Kopara Road,also when he worked at the brewery in Greymouth he would send bottles of whiskey to Lucy and Lill on the trucks delivering beer ect to the Haast pub in return for whitebait.Lill was still deer stalking well into old age

Christine Banks It was Sammy, not Harry Yde, he was my dad's uncle. Sammy's only son died in Britain, training as a WW2 pilot.

Bruce Edwards New them both when they came to Haast whitebaiting in the morris minor . A couple of hard cases . Those were the days.

Lyn Moe Sammy Yde was a Belgian who went to Canada before coming here. He was a great stage coach driver and took over the second hotel in the gorge entrance. He was driving for Cassidy and took over the hotel from him. As well as running the hotel he kept driving on occasions for Cassidy. He also owned a snow plough that took six horses to pull.

Terence Pugh it was a well know saying at Turiwhate by my father Pat Pugh and Uncle Viv "whos got such and such of a tool ,Sammy Yde gave that to me ,He was gone by the time I was born but his house still stood till the sixties ,just up from the mill

This is an old post and unsure if your still watching David Verrall. This is my Grandaunty Lil. I have some information on her life. PM if you have any question. She was a wonderful person who always had lollies in her pockets, and would turn up at home in her Morris Minor. She was the youngest of 10 children grew up at Otira. Born in 1906. And yes brought the stagecoaches down off the pass. Lil on the left.
