In Charles Uphams book “Mark of The Lion “ he ( Upham) describes the bravest soldier he had ever seen . That being Captain Dave Kirk - coal miner from Blackball
There has only ever been 3 double VC’s awarded - 2 in the First World War & one in the 2nd World War ( Charlie Uphams )
Upham was imprisoned in Colditz castle in Germany where he managed to “permanently borrow “ some items which I have had the pleasure of viewing on several occasions at his son- in-laws Forbes Mackenzie in Nth Canterbury

Lois Iacoppi I would have liked to meet Charles Upham
He truly was one in a million,
Dave Kirk decorated?
Colin Tuck Lois Iacoppi I could reiterate a very true story from my late father about him (Dave Kirk) when they were in battle together and the Germans were dropping Paratroopers all around them- I’ll stop there as it would bring a tear to a glass eye !
If you wanted to know I could write it via email to you - but you must uphold the thought that it was battle - them or us scenario.

Rick Barker I remember Gus too. A good man to.me as a boy growing up
David Clarke Back in the day Lew Tuck used to bring in his Land-rover to be serviced at Union Garage, before he got in to Land-cruisers, over the Xmas Break. The contents of the Land-rover was always interesting. The way the “wok” world has gone he would have broken god knows how many laws, but I feel sure we would have just laughed as he did. The Coast was built by people like Lew. Great memories.

Jack Kelly was my Dad’s (Lou Knight) boss, at the Caltex bulk fuel depot on Chesterfield and Tasman streets. Like my Dad, Jack was also a POW in WW2, however I’m not sure if he was captured by the Germans or The Japanese forces. He was like an older brother to Dad. Jack’s wife was Joan, a very charismatic woman.
