About this image
Description\Peter Robertson: Can remember the last publican. Paddy Mullins. Old Paddy used to walk along the line picking up coal that the drivers threw out for him,and one morning, about 1957 I think, poor old fella got skittled. The bar was very small and dark and a keg sat on it. I had a raspberry there when I was a kid.Closed in 1951 when the Commission closed a lot of small pubs.
Kevin Voigt: When I drove delivery truck for West brewies I delivered 18 s to kamaka hotel old Paddy was publican then we always put keg up on bar for him always shoutedMap[1] Contributor Moe Bowes

Mary Moffitt Please can somebody explain the location to me, because I seem to remember Kamaka in a different place just up the main road from Stillwater. My memory is not perfect!!!!!
Geoffrey Bell 12 Mile. At the turn-off to No Town
Mary Moffitt Thank you. Now I've got it. Johnny Logan had a farm there??
Geoffrey Bell Correct
Alison Hibbs And a family of Moore lived behind the bamboo fence and 4 of them went to Stillwater School. There were twins. Helen Moore was an older one. Jeanette was one of the twins. And I think the older boy lived up Reefton way later on.
Mary Moffitt I remember Helen Moore? Were Ray and Mary Moore her parents? Ray was a good tennis player and was in our tennis team. Mary read books during the tournaments and practices.

KAMAKA LICENCE SUSPENDED
The first West Coast hotel to close since the Licensing Control Commission sat on the West Coast will be the Kamaka Hotel, about 10 miles north of Greymouth. The hotel will close its doors to the public on Monday, June 30, for the last time.
Ref. Press (13 June 1952)
Seems to have surrendered licence voluntarily because by going quietly there was a chance as government compensation pay-out.
Pubs were under the gun to prove to the government why their license should not be revoked. Guilty until proven innocent!

At least 4 people have been killed by the train at Kamaka. Paddy Mullins, Frank Wordsley and Joseph Burgess were pedestrians and Mary Wolstenholme was in a car.
