DescriptionGreymouth Railway Christmas Party 1906. This was a postcard that he sent home to his family in England. They emigrated to Chrsitchurch in 1907.

My Grandfather George MARSH, 5th from right, next to tall man in light coloured hat. He gained employment aged 16 with the London Brighton & South Coast Railway on 16 August 1895. He started at Plympton Station as a Booking Clerk, his salary being 10/- a week. He was promoted and moved to Hove on 19 Dec 1896, his salary now 12/6 pw. By 15 Aug 1898 he was at Henfield Station earning 15/- pw.

On the 8th June 1901 he began casual employment as a clerk with NZR, pay 8/- a day at Christchurch. Permanent appointment on 2nd August 1902 on £120 per year. Transferred to Rakaia in 1903 then Kaiapoi in 1904. In December of 1905 he was in Greymouth and earning £150. A post card sent to his parents in England in January 1906 shows him at a staff function. He was Station Master at Stillwater in October 1908 and Kumara in November. His pay was now £180, rising to £200 by April 1910. He transferred back to Christchurch as a clerk in 1912. Station Master at Styx the same year.

In March of 1913 he was at Te Awamutu. That was the end of his time in the South Island. He went off to War, married and English lay and returned to the Railways in 1920. He was appointed as Stationmaster in Whangarei where he retired He died there aged 79 in 1959.Date of Photo1906Map^[1]ContributorChris Farrington
