Elaine Bolitho "Mr Explorer Douglas" was a fascinating fellow. Reckoned there were all sorts of mineral deposits in South Westland and drew up an amazing map which can today be seen at the National Library. My late father in law Jim Bolitho, as a fairly new graduate of Otago Un iverssity/

Elaine Bolitho School of mines was tasked with taking parties of explorers into Paringa to check for these minerals (Depression Years) You can read about this in 'Reefton School of Mines - Stories of Jim Bolitho' recently republished byu7 Friends of Waiuta. .'Mr Explorer Douglas' also drew up comprehensive maps of the West Coast - one of which was the feature of a recent exhibition at the National Library in Wellington.
