By: Tony Caldwell29th Jun 2020 2:05PMThis is actually a photo of the Woolston Brass Band that won the Championship Grade of the New Zealand Brass Band Contest, at Christchurch, in February 1950. It’s conductor was R. J. Estall. Four months after that win, the Band would make a visit to the Buller region at the invitation of the Westport Municipal Band.

Found in my great aunt's (Helen McGregor of Blacks Point) post-card album, with postmarked post-cards between 1902 - 1920.

It was obviously a fairly successful time for the band in terms of competitions, given all the trophies.

I remain hopeful that perhaps one of more of McGregor boys (John, James, and William all of Black's Point) might be in here, but more likely there’s a bloke in here who was an acquaintance from Reefton perhaps.Date of PhotoBetween 1st January 1902 and 31st December 1920Map^[1]ContributorKeith Funnell

Naireen Bass - Look at the medals the chap 2 in on the left 2nd row from back is wearing! Must be a very early photo as I don't see Tony Fortune in it :-)
Arthur Bass - The tenorhorn player 4th from the left middle row looks familiar. Name won't come at the moment.
Myron Caldwell - Well before my time with ISB. Isn't it amazing that small places had brass band of reasonable sizes. I suppose no tv, 6 o'clock closing, which was strictly observed on the Coast led to the men joining up. it would be rare for a woman to belong even in the 50's unless she was the secretary of tea lady. Even in the 60's an English couple in Dunedin went to join a top band to be told we don't take women. Sexism was alive then, other than for the Dunedin Women's Band. OOPS Ladies' Silver Band.
Ruth Naylor - Was band practice an excuse for 1 or more on the way home in those early days.

Myron Caldwell - If you had been the Sgt at Reefton you would have put 21 and 50 together as I did. I never applied for there, so keeping away may have helped me in my quick maths, as taught by Don McKenzie.. lol
David Irving - Looks like NZ champion band for that year good to know if they were an A B or C grade so we can check records?
