DescriptionBlackball panorama, as a postcard. Annotated as photographed by a D. Cochrane. No postmark date stamp.

One of several hundred postcards collected by my great aunt, Helen McGregor while living at Blacks Point and Reefton, with postmark dates on those cards ranging from 1902 through to 1920.

I note within PapersPast a D. Cochrane as part of a family business operating as "hotelkeepers" in 1885, wherein they dissolved their Cochrane & Sons partnership and also a partnership associated with sawmilling. Keith Funnell Geoffrey Bell, I am assuming the street corner in this blurred image is looking down Clifford St, with Harper St across the front? Despite it being blurred I can make out the 2 storied hotel on the corner of Hart St and Hilton St, which was called the Blackball Hotel (is that right?), with the Formerly the Hilton Hotel (Dominion Hotel) two buildings along Hart St. Still not sure if I can determine which of the buildings in that image would have been McGregor's drapery on the corner of Jolliffe's Lane and Hilton Street ... can you hazard a guess?

Geoffrey Bell Keith Funnell. The last photo, which shows Kinsella's Blackball Hotel, the Miners'Hall and the Dominion Hotel, is quite distorted. Would it be possible to post a clearer copy of it?

Keith Funnell Geoffrey Bell, have attached another here, but original is blurred. That may explain why I did not find a "D. Cochrane" listed as a photographer I suppose.

Geoffrey Bell Correct with the hotels' location Keith, but sorry I can't help with McGregor's Drapery location. It's a pity this photo is partly blurred. It would have been a great photo otherwise.

Keith Funnell Geoffrey Bell ... how about a date guesstimate ? We think Ethel McGregor set up the drapers shop about 1919, and I guess the printed copy of this panorama may have been acquired sometime around then or a bit later. Just when it was taken of course, who knows ... hmmm

Geoffrey Bell Keith, I would say you are correct with the 1919 date. Dominion was built in 1910, so after that. The land in Hilton Street, on the diagonal to the 2 Storied Blackball Hotel, has not been built on but in this photo taken in 1940 it has and the other buildings on that side of Hilton Street to Kilgour Street are gone in the 1940 photo.

Keith Funnell Geoffrey Bell thanks for the date estimate. That also corresponds with the date range (1902 - 1920) that the postcards in my Great Aunt Helen’s album have as franked dates of postage and, therefore, collection dates. In the 1940 aerial photo I am struggling to identify the petrol bowser outside McGregor’s drapery shop. Denise Lois Gordon - Hill can you identify the shop in the 1940 photo?
