Many years ago, my Grandmother Mary Cameron gave me a set of crockery from the Empire Hotel plus knives, forks and spoons all marked "Empire Hotel Waiuta".
Sadly in a burglary most of the stuff was stolen, but I still have a bread and butter plate, and a dessert plate and soup dish, plus a few knives.
The crockery was known as " Hotel Ware" and was made by Johnson Bros, England.

Crockery from the Empire Hotel, Waiuta.

DescriptionPeter Kerridge.."The Empire Hotel Waitua was built for my widowed great grandmother Ann O`Donnell(nee McNamara). She was licensee of the Rose and Thistle hotel, Blackwater in the early 1900s. Subsequently, she opened a hotel on the old Prohibition Road at Waiuta , and later(in 1915) had the Empire Hotel built in the Waiuta township which she ran with her only son Paddy and other family members. Ann died in 1934 and Paddy sold the hotel to George Talbot in May 1935. It passed through other owners until its eventual closure in the 1950s.
Ann was living in the Woodstock/Rimu area near Hokitika when she was widowed in 1896.She eked out an existance running a small grocery store at Woodstock. Across the Hokitika River was the Kaniere hotel named the Empire . She may have chosen that name for her Waiuta hotel as a link to her past,or simply because it was a common hotel name in most West Coast towns."

Would have been no small thing to have ordered specially glazed pottery

Dave Perry Bob Laing Would have to have been imported probably from the UK. Crown Lynn in NZ made chinaware but only late 1940s and later until it was closed.

Dave Perry Bob Laing The Mine was owned buy a British Company Consolidated so they may have also owned the Empire Hotel and supplied the crockery as well. Some older residents would know as I think it closed around 1951.

One thing is for real Dave the Coast has a most interesting history
