Yes at Omoto, the loco dumping started around 100 years ago at the race course end beside the little creek that comes out in to the Grey on the bend, there is ment to be a Canterbury "J" class in there but nobody has ever found it. Anyway the last dumping of locos was by the big slip in the mid 50's, it was a cheap way to stop the river eating away the railway embankment. Back about 10 years ago a group (Midland rail heritage) recovered two "Uc' class locos and a "La" class loco from the bottom of the Grey river were they had ended up. The rest of the locos still on the bank wouldn't be easy to recover with out the whole bank coming down.

Jeffrey Harrison I've got lots of photos of them coming out of the river, even had some published in the NZ Railfan mag back then too smile emoticon as for updates on them... there isn't any, they have been sitting out in the field behind the Springfield railway station with nothing having been done on them at all.
Zody Ensor I thought so
Jeffrey Harrison Funny thing is my Dad as a young man watched them go in the river, years later I watched some of them coming out!
Zody Ensor "It'll buff right out"
June Griggs I watched them go in when i was a child. My Dad took us down to watch.
Lynda Campbell-Harris Why were they rolled into the river?

Just criminal when you think about it these days but back then I guess they were thought of as disposable once they reached the end of their working life.
James Crooks
Alaine Bright nope was not thought as disposable was to help hold up the omoto slip there were couple out there for that reason
Trish Rennie

Ian Coates Ian Coates isn't there a story about this with gdad?
Ian Coates
Lyndal Coates yep he is on the film when they were hooking out the wrecks out of the river, and your great ,great grandfather was in charge of the work you see in the picture when they were pushing those old wrecks down the bank.
Cobden Kidd
Lorrayn Dash this is the train luke was telling me about when they were rafting down the grey lol
Kirsty Cadigan
Very interesting
Roger O'Regan
Hind sight is a wonderful thing isn't it. Look at all the scrap metal dealers travelling the Coast picking up horse drawn implements, old tractors, and anything metal. We never knew the future value but the scarcity has made what is left even more precious. Great that one or two of these locos could be reclaimed and be part of our rich history. Big ups to the guys who rolled them into the rivers for ground stability (pragmatic) and big ups to those who retrieved any. Simply part of our history.
