DescriptionThe Westport section of the NZR, as it was called then,wasn't connected to the rest of the South Island rail network until Dec 1941.

Gwen Griffiths.." The original branch line north of Westport was built to transport coal from the mines toWestport Harbour. Construction began on 13 July 1874 and the first section to Fairdown opened31 December 1875. My great grandmother Lizette Griffiths nee Sheldon, wife of James was present at the sod turning ceremony in Westport.
Waimangaroa was reached 5 august 1876, Ngakawau 26 September 1877, Mokihinui 1895.
