The Railway Hotel at Ngahere which my Husbands Grand Mother owned.

This was on a bit of a rise on the left as you head north out of Ngahere. Just before the Sawmill.

All the Thornton's were the family of Mary Anne Thornton owner of the Railway. I believe the hotel was on the corner where the timber yard is now. It was from this hotel that Margaret got her driver's license.. didn't sit any tests and during the big flu epidemic drove Dr Telford who resided in Blackball, around the Grey Valley to administer to the flu sufferers. She claimed she didn't get the flu because she had to sit in the canvas topped vehicle outside often in the rain and wait. She was of the opinion that she was the first lady driver in the grey mouth area. Date of photo unknown but possibly around 1912 to 1914. Shona Ratana Great service from the butchers delivery I used to ask for knuckle bones After a few weeks I had enough Had to boil the bone down remove the knuckle and loved playing that game

Shona Ratana As well as boiling down the knuckle bones we had to then paint them. These knuckle bones were huge things compared to the commercial ones that you bought later on. So much fun. We had the coal range and it was always there to cook on, so no power usage. Also will mention whiting our sand shoes for sports and dying green shoes black for school. No end of things to do back then?
