Brigid Calder When we owned the Australasian Hotel I gather information with the help of Jack Flood. Kyle is correct. Here is some of the information I gathered. The hotel was first built just above the present Camping ground, and a wooden rail horse drawn tram which went from Greymouth to Taramakau had a station under the verandah of the hotel. However when the railway line and road was built where they are today the hotel was left without passing customers so the hotel was jacked up, placed on beer barrels and rolled to its present site. It took a week to move the hotel. Also in 1906 Martha Keowan was the first women in New Zealand to hold a Publicians Licence. She was the wife of Robert Keown who had established the Australian Hotel. The hotel has a very rich and interesting history.

I first laid eyes on the "Aussie" in about 1954, it was close to where we lived in Byron Street.
It has a white rough cast exterior comprising a number of archways.
Publicans were numerous over many years.
