Goldsborough map 1981

DescriptionI am wondering if anyone can help me with knowledge of Goldsborough walks. The attached picture comes from a pamphlet put out by the NZ Forest Service in 1981, amended reprint in 1984. I walked this track probably in the early 90s, and came out on the road at the other end, and walked back to the picnic area at Goldsborough. The first bit of the track was clear and easy to follow back then, but the latter bit not so much. My cousin Maurice Payn has recently given me a copy of a postcard sent to Miss C Scetrini at "Tunnel Terrace, Goldsborough". What I am wondering is, does this track or a modern variant, pass by Tunnel Terrace where the Scetrini (Scettrini) family were living?Date of Photo1981Map^[1]ContributorMaggie Riordan

CommentsMaggie Riordan PS- I have also seen the Scettrini family described as living at "Big Dam, Waimea." Births were registered as being at Waimea.

Glenn Johnston Some of those walks on that map are now unmaintained. e.g. The Lawsons Flat track and the Callaghans Water Race Track. They used to help make a good loop from Goldsborough back to Goldsborough with just about 2.5km of road walking. As for Tunnel Terrac…See More

Anbarbara Duckett That is such a shame. They were easy fun walks for tourists and it was a lovely place to picnic and fossick. The history was evident everywhere and the water race was fascinating. It's typical of DOC that the easy stuff is not maintained.

Dylan Higgison Anbarbara Duckett goldsborough track , shamrock creek , german gully , goffs , tunnel terrace are still maintained to some degree by DOC.

Glenn Johnston Our family can identify with that. My grandfathers sister was born at an Accomodation House (pub) on the Old ChCh Road in 1874 and that birth was recorded as Waimea as well. Waimea as well as being the gold field was another name for Goldsborough. My take is that Goldsborough (Waimea) is where the birth was registered. (It would have been the closest administrative center to where the birth took place)

Glenn Johnston Maggie Riordan This map shows the Tunnel Terrace walk about smack in the middle. It is west of your map and next to the Stafford - Goldsborough Road. It is sign posted.

Maggie Riordan Ahhhh thank you. Maurice was trying to explain to me on the phone about another road. I need to get a topo map of the area to look at it all.

Maggie Riordan So when I walked the Goldsborough track, thinking 'my family lived here somewhere'- in fact I was too far east of where they lived!!

Margaret Atkinson My dad Peter Tinetti was born in Goldsborough in 1908, he told me that Goldsborough was added to Waimea to stop confusion with Waimea in Nelson. My great uncle Fred Baretta was married to Nellie Scettrini.

Maggie Riordan Yes, I have come across information about Nellie and her marriage to Fred Baretta. Nellie was my great-aunty. I have also come across the Tinetti name in various places.

Glenn Johnston Margaret Atkinson Hi, I've just done a bit of checking and the Post Office is recorded as changing its name at what was Waimea to Goldsborough effective 22/11/1884. This P O closed 28/7/1953. The P O was instrumental in having lots of names changed where duplicate names were confusing for postal services.

Glenn Johnston Good on you! Many of those goldfields walks give an insight in to the huge amount of work our forbears from the goldrush era put in. They radically changed the landscape seeking gold but now regrowth native bush cloaks many of these areas hiding the scars.
