Slaty Creek - between Moonlight and Pike Streams - topographical map.

DescriptionVern Tuck confirmed that the location of the Slaty Creek Mill, which appears in a couple of Tuck family photos, is between the Moonlight and Pike Streams - see map.
Note the spelling Slaty - not Slatey. There are many streams with both spellings shown on NZ topographical maps.

CommentsBrian Molloy The name on the Bridge is Slatey I am sure. And the Pike stream runs into the Slatey via Big River(although the Slatey is often called Big River). Slatey Creek is not between the Moonlight and the Pike it is between the Moonlight and the Craigeburn Creeks.Bill Liddell Graham Liddell ???

Bill Liddell Slatey Creek or Slaty creek as it is know today comes out of a gorge that flows through John Liddells Farm In the old days it was actually referred to as Little Slatey It merges into the Big River [referred to in the old days as big Slatey about half a km below the swinging bridges Combined these two rivers could be a menacing force flowing down to the Grey River and much money has been spent over the years protecting the farm,land Big river is a very cold river that has crystal clear water and beautiful brown trout that comes down a gorge starting way up under the Paparoas and again comes out of that gorge at the top of John Liddells farm .

Brian Molloy Slim Gillman had a horse called Slatey which I assume was named after the creek. (Alma Doolan - Kevin's wife - was a Gillman - Slim's neice). He was a pretty smart horse I believe but his main claim to fame is that Colman Creagh won his only race on him in a hurdle race at Amberley. I think it was his first ride.
