CommentsBrian Molloy The name on the Bridge is Slatey I am sure. And the Pike stream runs into the Slatey via Big River(although the Slatey is often called Big River). Slatey Creek is not between the Moonlight and the Pike it is between the Moonlight and the Craigeburn Creeks.Bill Liddell Graham Liddell ???

Brian Molloy Graham Berry yeah I see on Google maps it is called Big River but again I am sure on old maps Big River flowed into the Slatey up at Jack Liddells. Paul will know. Great days on the hay Grimm then swimming in the slatey at the bridge?

I remember going to the horse races at moonlight as a kid. It was what they call a picnic meeting with no TAB. Does anyone know where on the map that would be and is there any racetrack there now.

Ken CampbellI can't pinpoint it on the map Ken. It was a farm belonging to one of the Kennedys that had farm(s) across the river at Totora Flat. They had what they called Equalisator bets but no totalisator. A big white Marque tent for a booth. Wood chopping and kids sports events. A great day out. I was probably 15 and working for Clayton's at Waimunga.

Yes I think with the Equalisator you placed a bet but didn't choose what horse you got. I could be wrong though so that somehow made it legal.

I remember going to the races as a child, great day out. My grandfather William (bill) McVicar was one the race judges.

Memories of those races. Tere were other events as well, greasy pig, children's running races. The long-drop loo way off in the bush. An area deemed 'do not go there' by my mother. Naturally I did, sneakily, it was the illicit booze place, and most likely where bets were made on the races.

Arthur Basscorrect Arthur. They were call Equalisator meetings. Slatey creek sports day. Also part of the axemans circuit as chops as well.

The tailings at Upper Moonlight are great to walk through. Twenty years ago there were still a few baches scattered about.
A big nugget was found there in old days.
