Brian Beban:
Stefan Beban was a Croatian from the Dalmatian Island of Zlarin, part of the then Austrian Empire. He left Zlarin in the 1850s and spent time in Victoria, Australia, in the goldfields after sailing the world as crew on sailing ships. He landed in Hokitika at the peak of the gold rush in 1867 and married within a year, moving to Stafford and then Goldsborough, where he lived until he died. He had eleven children and they all had stories of their own. Proud to be a descendant of Stefan, a true West Coast pioneer. I am currently editing a final version of a history of the Beban family and hope to have a book published this year. Any information on Stefan's actual ship or date of landing in Hoki still needed.

Desiree Beban: If the funeral was at Hokitka it is my Great Grandfather who is interred at Hokitika Cemetery. He arrived in Hokitka in 1865 from Croatia & married Catherine McDonald. My brother Brian is currently compiling a family history & may well comment & add information. Gerard Beban, Cambridge
