DescriptionThe men in the photo entitled "The Boxers" are John (Jack) Beban, the southpaw, and his friend Frank Bell.

Jack and Frank trained boxing in Perotti Hall. Perotti Hall was at the rear of the Perotti residence on the present site of the Church of England in Greymouth: of prominence it served as the Italian Consulate in the late 1890's early 1900's. Jack trained quite a few local boys and men, while Frank trained among others over time his 6 sons; several of whom went on to hold NZ titles.

Jack and his father Arthur (Artie) were both sportsmen on the West Coast. Their greatest love in sport was boxing. Both were boxers, trainers and national referees of boxing and wrestling. Each served as presidents and elected life members of the NZ Boxing Association.

They held West Coast Heavyweight titles:

Artie in1908, aged 21.

Brian Gus Heveldt The Bells and the Bebans absolute Legends in Greymouth (PARADISE) way back.The Bell Boys everyone of them absolute Top Blokes everyone of them,and their Parents they didn’t come better.I am sure back in those Days we had the best of it and life was pretty simple especially with those six Guys keeping an eye out for us.

Robin Gibbens Frank was a great man ,dad had the service station next to the milk bar in the early 60s and frank would carry me over his shoulder and lift the lid on the ice cream and hold me up side down over the top and let me pick what flavour I wanted , still remember it fondly he was always good to me as a young boy. Lenny served his apprentice ship with dad at Gibbens panel beating . Great family and times

David Barry Grant Shame boxing still not big on the Coast. I trained at GWMC under I think was Frank Bell,Jack Mc Donald, and Cliff Marsh. When that closed down trained with Cliff in bar at Kings Hotel. Were tournaments all over Coast. Favorite opponent wasRay ( cheezy) Fisher.
