This hand coloured portrait photo shows Susan Jackson. (nee Poingdestre) It was taken on the West Coast in 1914 when Susan was about 60 years of age. Susan was born on Jersey, one of the Channel Islands about 1855. Records show she came out solo to Canterbury, New Zealand arriving on the ship Rakaia in April 1874. [Her age was recorded as 19 yrs and her occupation as servant. Oral history suggests family sent/brought her out to NZ as she already had relatives in Canterbury. These included bachelor Henry Poingdestre an early Canterbury run holder who during the gold rushes was a prominent mining “speculator” in both the Thames and Reefton areas]

Susan married Henry Jackson of Hokitika at Lyttleton in April 1879. It appears the pair lived in Canterbury for a while as the first two children were born there. Three further children were born on the West Coast the first at Brunnerton in 1883 and then two more in Greymouth. Husband Henry was a draper by trade but also worked mining at times and according to oral history was an entrepreneur/speculator.

Susan’s youngest child Lilian Rose Jackson, a tailoress from Greymouth, married William Warden Goodfellow, a builder of Hokitika. She was my grandmother. Susan Jackson still has various descendants living on the West Coast.Date of Photo1914Map^[1]ContributorGlenn Johnston
