If my memory is correct in the 1940;s the Dowlings lived in the second last house on the left heading north in Aylmer Street just about opposite the Mays, paddocks next door which later had mill houses built by P.G.Morrisons Christchurch 1949/1950, cross the shingle road from there and the last house was Mitchells old house opposite the school house. occupied by Cowan (daughter Alyth) who retired in Timaru and then the Sharps. Next headmaster for short time I think was WA Meates the All Black.I lived diagonally opposite the Dowlings at the time between the Adamsons and the house occupied at one time by us followed by rhe Mitchells (Cecil and Adelaide, son David) then Gorden Elley Jnr, son of the butcher. He kept a race horse there for a while caslled Leigh Note. Gorden finished up with the Mahanipua Hotel followed by a dairy in Christchurch and then selling Electroluxes. Brother Barry had the Recreation Hotel in Greymouth. Their father Gordon Snr was an original burtcher in Ross before taking over a butchery in Marsden Road Greymouth.
