In 1960 the Haast Pass road (part of State Highway 6) opened from Otago to Haast on the coast. It would be another five years before the section from Haast to Lake Paringa was completed. I remember going through Mahinapua Forest on my motorbike about 1979-80 and came across the wreck of a vintage car and shavings from a metalwork lathe. There was no building standing where I found the shavings though.
