I remember the Trapp Family performing in Greymouth about that time. We had a lot of national and international performers travelling to Greymouth then, and the Trapp family became better known to us when their story was presented in the film 'The Sound of Music'.
It is clear to me now that the performances were probably funded ones to promote music in schools. We attended as a school. The Trapps demonstrated recorders in all their shapes and forms, bass to treble, throughout the concert.
Recorders were much less expensive to buy than standard instruments like pianos and violins etc, and you did not have to tune them. They were certainly easier to take to lessons. I think nearly every school and many homes were then inundated with them.
What I remember about the performance of the Trapps is their personalities, songs, and voices, and of course the extreme youth of the performers.
I was disappointed in the presentation of Maria Von Trapp in the film because Julie Andrews did not look at all like her. It spoiled my memory if the real woman. But the film was great, really.

It was probably associated with the visit of the Trapp Family singers to Greymouth in the fifties. I reckon they could have been paid to promote a cheap way for children to produce music. They were wonderful, and then it was not long before we saw their story in the film ‘The Sound of Music’ with Julie Andrews as Maria Von Trapp. It made it all so special - for me, at least.
