- Dobson is a small town on the banks of the Grey River in the South Island of New Zealand.
- The town is named for the surveyor George Dobson, who was murdered at this site in 1866. He was killed in a bungled robbery by a gang who had mistaken him for a gold buyer carrying gold from the nearby Arnold goldfield.
- The Dobson mine was opened in 1919, and closed in 1968. It was the site of one of the country's worst mining disasters. Nine men were killed in an explosion at the mine in 1926.

Judi Trompetter I didn’t grow up on the coast even though my Mum came from Matai She hated the rain and moved to ChCh when she was 27 so we grew up there I will always think of Dobson as my home had 30 years there meeting some wonderful families

Roger Janette Reid Pop and Nana Findley farm is at St Kilda next to Smithers on Taylorville road down to Kiwi point. The first house was the one down by the river and then pop built the one up by Taylorville rd cow shed was on the other side of the road. Where they have recently mined.Len Brereton Went back at the weekend stayed Dobson had couple top pub Jock blackball
