DescriptionThis mottled Silver Pine and Totara Fruit Bowl and mottled Silver Pine Egg Cups were made by Joe Molloy from Kotuku in the 1940s. Joe made many of these useful items and many in his family received them as presents. The wood used would have been sourced from the Kotuku area.

They had suffered badly over the years through exposure to the heat etc., and to the point where the bowl warped and split and fell to pieces around the top. My mother was going to throw the bowl out, but I said I would have them. They sat in a cupboard in my garage for years and I decided I had better do something about restoring the bowl, so after some steaming, clamping, reassembling, sanding and about 15 coats of French Polish they are back on display.Date of PhotoBetween 1st January 1940 and 31st December 1949Map^[1]Contributor Geoffrey Bell

Myron Caldwell Didn't they get great colours and grains with woodturning all those years ago. Good on you praying for the resurrection of the bowl. The inlaws (oops inlays) and contrasting colours are something one doesn't even forget in ones dotage.

Dave Kelly I have this fruit bowl that was a wedding present for my parents in 1945.
They were married in Woodstock and they said it was made locally by a wood turner.
The inlays around the edge are local native species.
It is in a used condition so maybe I should get it restored.

Catherine Brian Denton Too nice to throw away....mottled Silver Pine would be even more scarce nowadays....great stuff to work with. We have a Silver Pine china cabinet with a Pink Pine top and an inlay of mottled Silver Pine along the top edge.

Anne Honey My parents had a china cabinet much admired. We also had achunk of trunk that we climbed all over. We lost it in a fire end of the 50s. Beautiful wood.
