John Walker I'll always remember this. Was heading down to Haast in a bit of a hurry, came around a corner and here was the Hokitika Traffic cop parked up beside the lake with his radar out (and eating his lunch). He put his light and siren on, but didn't chase me. I did slow down. The following Friday night that same officer was playing in a band in the Hoki Workingmens club. He came over and quietly said, I know who you are, I don't need to chase you, the next time you go past me at the speed you were doing I will bring the ticket in here and hand it to you.

Ron Hibbs In the 50’s while living at The Forks my dad used to go duck shooting on this lake( before national park) One early foggy morning he set of from the jetty in a small boat to go to his favourite spot,after sometime the fog lifted, he discovered that he had not gone very far from the jetty, just around and around in a big circle, no ducks, went back to the pub with his mates to drown his sorrow.
